Supposed landlords, who often state they are living out of the country, have been asking would-be tenants prove they have sufficient money for a deposit before they are shown the property they are interested in renting. The fraudsters tell their victims that their money is secure and that no-one else can access the funds. The victims soon discover that their money has disappeared and the rental property does not even exist.
Citizens Advice Bureau – Reports Across the UK
The Citizens Advice Bureau is leading on this scam warning, after they received reports from several branches across the UK about the fraud. One branch reported the case of a student who had been asked by the supposed landlord to transfer almost £2,000 to a friend in order to prove she had sufficient funds to rent a room she had seen advertised online. She made the transfer and sent the receipt to the ‘landlord’. When the victim’s friend went to collect the money, the money had already been taken by someone else.
The victim went to report the crime to the police, but was told there was no case because she couldn’t prove how the money had been collected. In essence, she could have been the fraudster herself because of a lack of evidence. When the victim returned to the money transfer company to find out more about the person who had collected the cash, they were unable to supply any further information without a crime reference number because of data protection laws.
