I feel really let down. The trailer made Battle: Los Angeles seem like a good extra terrestrial invasion film was finally about to hit the screens, but alas, we have another mediocre, predictable, shallow and boring alien action film. I had seen some reviewers ripping right into the film before I ventured out to spend my hard-earned cash, and I should have heeded their advice. So there's your warning!
Battle: Los Angeles overview
The film starts with marines under fire from the alien invaders. At this moment, it really looks like the film has potential. The CGI is really good, and this action scene, along with a few others throughout the film, is carried out really well. However, we then flash back to 24 hours before the invasion. This is where the film sinks, and never really redeems itself. We're slowly introduced to the main characters, all of whom are shallow, cliched, and stereotypical. Despite all of this, Aaron Eckhart's acting does shine through a lot during the film. The writing was generally terrible, but Eckhart managed to make it work where most of the others could not. You can't really blame them, though.
We discover that Eckhart is a staff sergeant in the military who has just given in his resignation. With the alien-invasion, he gets called back to duty (but timing, huh?). Echkart is assigned to a team of young marines, led by a lieutenant who is just out of training onto his first mission. The team is assigned to head out to a police station on the battle front, where some civilians have been hiding and called in a distress signal. The team manages to make it to the police station and make contact with the civilians; however, the invasion gets taken up a notch, and then everything starts going wrong.
