Jurustic Park, Marshfield, Wisconsin, is a grand menagerie of huge steel turtles and semi-amphibious frogs, several species of iron birds, a 45-foot iron “Attack Dragon,” and what looks to be a two-ton, dinosaur-like immensity. Park and walk through an imaginative maze of spiders, racing snails, freaky fish, and open-jawed “Marsh Gators.”

Inside, a somewhat scruffy man with mop of white hair framing a welder’s helmet unbuttons his black leather jacket and gestures with a long finger. “McMillan Marsh,” he says, removing the helmet. He pauses to let it sink in, then adds with a chuckle, “they date back to the Iron Age.” His hunched shoulders relax a bit as he turns away from the work at hand and settles into his story like an old leather chair. “Good rust inhibitors were not available to save them from the corrosive effects of pollution,” he continues, motioning me toward a fifty-foot “Statue of Liberty” dragon, which he notes is carrying the torch of the Jurassic Period.
“You know,” says the man, “I did my best to excavate and recreate the now extinct iron species. They died out when farming and industry moved into the area in the mid 19th century.”
